440C Martensitic Stainless Steel
Introduction & Properties
Martensitic stainless steel 420SS is widely used on the plastic mold around the world. Mechanical properties of 420SS is good, and it has excellent corrosion resistance and high strength as well as wear resistance after heat treatment (quenching and tempering). But 420SS’s weldability is poor. Because of high amount of carbon and chromium,420SS has high hardness.

Forging process of 420SS
420SS should be annealed after forging. And the way of preheating is slowly heated to 800 ℃, quickly to 1200 ℃
initial forgin g temperature / ℃ final forging temperature / ℃ cooling
1160 ~ 1200 ≥ 850 cooling with sand
Application
Because the performance of 420SS is similar to 420/S42000, it is used with the requirements of high load, high wear resistance and under the corrosive media:
• transparent, opaque plastic mold.
• surgical instruments, surgical instruments, medical scissors
• bearing, valves, springs, knives, utensils and so on.
