Introduction
UNS S42020
Martenistic stainless steel 420F (UNS S42020) is a kind of steel that is easy to machine, grind and polish.It contains high amount of sulfur, which improves cutting ability. 420F has good corrosion resistance under weak acids but with poor welding. And it has resisted corrosion from mild atmospheres, fresh water, ammonia, many petroleum products and organic materials, and several mild acid environments.

Preparatory heat treatment of 420F/S42020
Annealing temperature of 800 ~ 900 ℃, slow cooling or rapid cooling around 750 ℃, the hardness ≤ 207HBW.
Quenching and tempering of 420F/S42020
Quenching temperature is 920 ~ 980 ℃, oil cooling; tempering temperature 600 ~ 750 ℃, rapid cooling, the hardness reaches 217HBW.
Application
420F (UNS S42020) can generally be widely used on parts with the requirements of high hardness and good corrosion resistance
However, it is not recommended for vessels containing gases or liquids under high pressure and plastic mold cavities where high mirror finish is essential.Typical application is shown below:
pump shafts, screw machines, cams, pivots, gears etc.
