416 (UNS S41600)
416 Martensitic Stainless Steel
Introduction & Properities
UNS S41600
Martenistic stainless steel 416 (UNS S41600) is one kind of stainless steel that has the best machinability of any stainless steel.
It has lower corrosion resistance than that of austenitic ones and some ferritic ones, and maximum corrosion resistance is achieved in the hardened condition, with a smooth surface finish. 416 (UNS S41600) is also the most readily machinable of all the stainless steels.
However, their useful operating temperature range is limited by their loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures and loss of strength by over-tempering at elevated temperatures, please pay attention to that concern.

Preheating of 416/S41600
Annealing : slow cooling to 800 ~ 900 ℃ or rapid cooling at 750 ℃, the hardness ≤ 200HBW.
Quenching and tempering of 416/S41600
Quenching temperature is 950 ~ 1000 ℃, oil cooling; tempering temperature 700 ~ 750 ℃, fast-cooling.
Application
Due to its low cost and ready machinability, 416 (UNS S41600) is widely used on parts under unhardened or hardened and highly tempered condition. Typcial applications are shown as below:
• automatic screw machines
• mircraft fittings, bolts, nuts, studs, rivets, screws
• many nonseizing and nongalling application
