UNS S41000
Martensitic stainless steel 410 (UNS S41000) is the most common hardenable one. Unlike austenitic ones, 410 can generate high strength with good ductility by heat treatment ("quenching and tempering"). And it has some corrosion resistance under dilute nitric acid and weak organic acids at room temperature.
P.S.: 410 is officially a kind of stainless steel but characteristically the material is actually a compromise of high carbon steel alloy (promoting wear resistance) and the chromium one (promoting corrosion resistance).

Forging process of 410/S41000
Initial forging temperature / ℃ final forging temperature / ℃ cooling
1100 ~ 1150 > 850 air-cooled
The best way of thermal processing is slowly heated to 800 ℃, and then quickly heated to initial forging temperature.
Welding of 410/S41000
A variety of welding processes can be used, if the joints weld happens after welding process, it should be annealed.
Application
410 (UNS S41000) is mainly used on parts with the requirements of toughness and corrosion resistant under high-impact loading, and can be widely used in mildly corrosive environments. However, the operating temperature range is limited due to the loss of strength by over tempering at elevated temperatures and the loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures.
The typical applications are shown as below:
• cutting tools, blades, fasteners, hydraulic valve;
• automotive exhausts
• cutlery,manifold,engine parts
• medical, dental and surgical devices and instruments
• valve parts,nozzles,springs
• oil well pump balls and seats.
