Introduction & Properties
430 (UNS S43000) is a kind of plain chromium ferritic stainless steel with low amount of carbon, and it is one of the most widely used ferritic ones. It has good corrosion resistance (including high resistance to nitric acid as well as to sulfur gases and many organic and food acids) as well as heat and oxidation resistance up to 1500°F (816°C) with good mechanical properties. However,430 does not provide the resistance to pitting under dilute reducing acids and has limited weldability and should not be used in the welded condition for dynamic or impact loaded structures. And 430 is liable to brittle fracture at sub-zero temperatures and cannot be used in cryogenic applications. And like other ferritic grades, the resistance to stress corrosion cracking is very high. As the one containing no nickel or molybdenum, 430 is cheaper than any of the 300 series.

Forging process of 430/S43000
Preheat / ℃ initial forging temperature / ℃ final forging temperature / ℃ Cooling
760 1040 ~ 1120 705 ~ 790 air-cooled
Heat treatment of 430/S43000
Annealing: 780 ~ 850 ℃, heat 1 ~ 2h, air cooling, the hardness ≤ 183HBW.
Application
Due to its good characters and low cost, 430 (UNS S43000) is widely used and perhaps one of the most pupolar of all stainless ones.
