Introduction & Properties
405 (UNS S40500) is a kind of ferritic stainless steel with low amount of chromium, andoxidation resistance can be improved by dding aluminum. Like other steels with low chromium, 405 (UNS S40500) has certain corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance,and its ductility, toughness as well as cold formability are better than that of other ferrite ones with higher chromium. It can also be used as kind of heat-resistant steel.

Forging process 405/S40500
Preheat / ℃ initial forging temperature / ℃ final forging temperature / ℃ Cooling
760 1040 ~ 1120 705 ~ 790 air-cooled
Annealing temperature is 780 ~ 830 ℃, heat 1 ~ 2h, air cooling, the hardness ≤ 183HBW.
Application
405 (UNS S40500) is mainly used for parts that can not be made of 410/S41000 or 430/S43000,typical applications are shown below:
• oil refining unit, steam turbine materials,
• quenching component
• turbine blades, structural frame,
• annealing boxes, stainless steel equipment
• lining and fasteners bolts, nuts.
