904L (904)
904L (904) Austenitic Stainless Steel
Introduction & Properties
904L (904) is a kind of austenitic stainless steel that is designed to achieve moderate to high corrosion resistance.With the high amount of molybdenum,chromium, nickel, 904L (904) has excellent corrosion resistance. The resistance properties include good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, resistance to stress corrosion cracking capacity, resistance to inter granular corrosion ability as well as good machinability and weldability. 904L (904) is also non-magnetic in all conditions and has excellent weldability and formability. And the austenitic structure also gives it excellent toughness, even below cryogenic temperatures.
The “L” in 904L stands for low carbon, 0.03 percent or less, which means that 904L has very good welding properties. It is also an austenitic alloy, so that a nonmagnetic solid solution of ferric carbide or carbon in iron is used to increase corrosion resistance.

Applications
Due to the amount of different kinds of elements, 904L (904) is designed for harsh environments of the corrosion conditions. Typical applications are shown as below:
• pulp and paper industry;
• seawater cooling equipment;
• chemical processing industry
• tacid processing plants, pulp and paper operations
• equipment for cooling seawater, oil refining.
