317L (UNS S31703)
317L Austenitic Stainless Steel
UNS S31703
Introduction
317L (UNS S31703) is a molybdenum-containing austenitic stainless steel
that is intended to provide improved corrosion resistance in highly corrosive environments, particularly those containing chlorides or other halides. 317 and 317L containing 3 ~ 4% molybdenum are preferred to Types 316 or 316L which contain 2 ~ 3% molybdenum in applications requiring enhanced pitting and general corrosion resistance because of the difference on amount of molybdenum. 317L (UNS S31703) is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but may become slightly magnetic as a result of welding.
Properties
317L (UNS S31703) has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of chemicals, especially in acidic chloride environments.Compared to 316L,increased amounts of chromium, nickel and molybdenum improve resistance to chloride pitting and general corrosion. Resistance increases as molybdenum content does. 317L (UNS S31703) is also resistant to sulfuric acid concentrations at temperatures as high as 120°F (49°C), and 317L is much more resistant to attack at the point of condensation than conventional alloy 316. The acid concentration has a great influence on the rate of attack in such environments and should be carefully determined by service tests.
