304 (UNS S30400)
304 Austenitic Stainless Steel
UNS S30400
Introduction
Austenitic stainless steel 304 (UNS S30400) is the standard “18/8” austenitic stainless
and it is the most versatile and most widely used stainless steel. 304 (UNS S30400) also is a low carbon (0.08% max) version of basic 18-8 also known as 302. It is an economical and versatile corrosion resistant stainless steel suitable for a wide range of general purpose applications with good mechanical properties and strength. Both 304 and 304L are non-magnetic in the annealed condition but may become slightly magnetic as a result of cold working or welding.304L is an extra low-carbon variationof 304 with a 0.03% maximum carbon content that eliminates carbide precipitation due to welding. Both grades can be used extensively.
Properties
304 (UNS S30400) has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of media. It resists ordinary rusting in most architectural applications and is also resistant to most food processing environments. And the chemical composition, mechanical properties, weldability and corrosion/oxidation resistance entitles 304 (UNS S30400) the best all-round performance at relatively lower cost.
